It's not the same at all. Nurses work a LOT here and it's about the only job you can go into and know you're set for life because there's a definite lack of. They also don't make as much, but our cost of living is lower.

There were a number of strikes by Quebec nurses a few years back. Are they still prevented from going on strike? That might account for their lower wages?
The low wages may have originated in the history of most Quebec hospitals being part of religious orders and the nurses were non-degree women who trained from 16 to be a nurse. My mother was a nursing sister in Ireland for a religious order..she left it.

These underpaid hard working nurses were the backbone of many health care systems here in Ontario as well as in Quebec. (we had more non religious hospitals though).

What are the wait times in Quebec for elected procedures? her it is up to 18 months for knees etc.
Being French speaking limits the mobility of French health workers as it is had for them to drop into Arizona and take a good job. Of course many doctors are bilingual...to what degree? I suspect fewer nurses are bilingual. Thus their wages get geographically capped.

My ex used to always get pissed that when you would go into the store in the mall they would speak to you first in english before french. This was Montreal by the way.

Mobility limits the mobility of many French-Canadian workers, both globally and in Canada. This is much the same as I am limited if I wanted to work in Québec. Now I do work in Québec...through my staff, many of whom are bilingual, but I do not direct the drillers or loggers, who speak only French.

I suspect a high % of Doctors are bilingual, but fewer nurses, but I do not have hard numbers.

Some jerks in my area get mad because many of the signs and things, especially inside businesses, are both in English and Spanish. I can't even imagine why this would be a big deal to anyone, it's not like they overnight REPLACED the English with Spanish so it's not like people suddenly can't find the ketchup.

In some places, in addition to the Spanish they also have Somali and Hmoob. Also you can get your utility bills in Spanish, Somali or Hmoob and your prescription information can be in just about any language (and by 'just about any language' I mean you have something like 24 to choose from so not everything but a lot).

Being bilingual isn't special or something we're proud of; we're bilingual by default. You only start to get kudos for languages after 3, 4, 5... 2 in Québec is basic.

You have to go out of your way to find non-bilingual Québécois, ie small villages outside Québec city. And those people aren't trying to work outside Québec.

You try to conform the world to your limits and that's silly. Most people in Québec are bilingual, in Montreal I'd say it's as many as 95% of people. How high is that percentage in Ontario?

There is some truth in what you say.
Montreal has a higher rate of bilingualism than the smaller towns, however it is far far less than 95%. I would say 20-25% overall, with English higher is some areas. In downtown shops that deal with tourists you will find a higher degree of bilingualism. Your comment that doctors and nurses should have the same degree of bilingualism is laughable. Doctors are far more bilingual than nurses. Nurses are more bilingual than the general population though, which follows from their profession and greater degree of education.

As for sexist and macho and closed mind...that is just an attack with no merit or basis in fact.

Limits on strikes act to keep wages down. Limits on fluency act to prevent where you can seek work. Less mobile workers can not go to Kansas for top wages if they cannot speak the language.

Read with care, I said the hospitals came from religious order hospitals and in those days the nursing sisters were part of the order and just got food +water. As the religions went away, this relic of free work from the nursing sisters also went away, but it lingered as a legacy of lower wages. Non sister nurses were paid low wages as well.

I well know that religion is near dead in the youth of Québec.

Some Demographic Facts

According to Statistics Canada, the rate of French-English bilingualism rose from 13.5% to 17% between 1971 and 1996, an increase of not more than 3.5%. However, it should be noted that in 25 years the proportion of bilingual anglophones in Quebec has risen from 37% to 61%, bringing us close to the day when that percentage will have doubled. The number of francophones who speak both languages rose from 26% to only 34%, in the same period.

I agree, montreal will have a higher ratio, but nowhere near the 95% you cite.

The census numbers are provincial. Therefore the large proportion of the province that is not near the two major city centers skews the numbers. People in small towns and villages LIKE IT THERE, they are not trying to work in the US or the rest of Canada, so they wouldn't feel a need to learn English quite as much as those of us who tend to need it more often. But when they get to Montreal, for example, they promptly learn. Like I said, and unless you live here it's really hard to explain, it's a matter of course.

Furthermore, bilingualism is mostly a French thing. The Anglos aren't learning French (as per Stats Can's 2001 census -- why would you not go into the last one??) as much as the French are learning English.

40% provincially can easily brought to, if not the 95% I said earlier, a number in the very high 80s when you stick to major city centers, especially when you stick to Montreal. You're seeing life with Ontarian eyes, and can't apply those numbers correctly here - that's not an attack, just calling it as I see it.

Our language courses start in grade school and are very effective. My daughter's school district (and a good number of them in Montreal) teach a third language starting in kindergarden, on a voluntary basis. She's taking Italian.

Whether you agree or not is of no real importance to me. We learn English long before we get out of grade school. It has nothing to do with higher education. We use University to learn a 3rd, 4th or 5th language.

Québec realizes the importance of languages in a way that I think only NB gets too, but to a different degree and for different, non religious reasons (tyvm).

I can agree there is a far greater emphasis on bilingualism in Montreal than in Trois Pistoles, and the youth are more bilingual than the seniors.

However, the % is not as high yet as you cite, possibly in 100 years 95% will be bilingual?..I tend to doubt it though as the law of diminishing returns sets in.

The young see the need for English to expedite mobility.
I doubt if the rest of Canada will become much more bilingual than they are now, save for those abutting Québec and a few small pockets. I do not think the birth rate is there for any group to spread that way any more. Immigration is the path to population growth to get enough people to look after the young of today in 75 years.

Of course, we may find a plague of mutated influenza that comes along that hooks onto all body cells and spreads in the air and we lose 50% of our people globally.

I bet one of them is a nurse.
